    Question

Has anyone used or does anyone know of a very simple and basic reporting tool that I can use for simple and basic reporting.
My clients database is currently 7.3.4 and will be migrating to 8i in the next quater.
The current reporting tool is Oracle's query builder. A new and simple replacement is needed as Oracle is no longer going to support this tool.

    Thanks

    Crystal Reports & Oracle Reports.
Who know what Oracle Reports does more than Crystal Reports?

I do not know much about Oracle, however, just out of curiosity - Does Discover not help you?

This is what it says in the Discover online manual

With Oracle Discoverer 3.1 within minutes you'll be finding the information you want, getting answers to your questions, and reporting your results. You'll work fast, and you won't have to know anything about the intricacies of SQL. Discoverer is an all-in-one information tool from Oracle. Discoverer gives you sophisticated ad hoc query, analysis, reporting and web publishing capabilities......... blah blah blah

    Hi,

Discoverer 3.1 report tool is most likely to be used in a DSS environment. As what TOPSTAR mentioned "you don't need to know the entricacies of SQL".
Crystal Reports and Oracle Reports can do both for DSS and OLTP system.

But for me Crystal Reports is more flexible, have much features compare to Discoverer and Oracle Reports.

I have used both Oracle Reports and Discover.

Both tools seem slow and clunky to me. In addition, someone needs to set up an End User Layer for Discoverer.

On the other hand, I cannot recommend a simple, cost effective solution.

Thank you all for your help.
I should have mentioned that we have looked into discoverer and business objects and decided that only about 10% of its functionality will be used . Also we have cognos on site but cognos as you may know works on a snapshot of the database so it has to be refreshed frequently.
I came across sql query builder but it only works with access database.
Thank you for mentioning Crystal reports I'll look into that.
If anymore tols come to mind please let me know.

    thanks

My understanding is that Business Objects is very expensive.

Like Discoverer, it is necessary to build a Universe and administrate it.

    Good luck.

IMHO, Visual Basic forms are a very efficient way of obtaining data from oracle/ Feeding data into database. You can then display data in user-friendly fashion. They are easily built and can be customised as per requirement.
The drawback is that they are platform dependent and require Windows on clent machine.

    What does DSS mean?
