Maybe SERVICE_NAME should be replaced with SID in the CONNECT_DATA string.

already did that. The same thing's working at the server the same way and the same settings. Just not on the client. Although it has the same settings too

You didnt happen to call your server the same name as your sid or instance??

nope. The machine name is like server and the sid name is like orcl and the global name is like orcl.domain

I suppose that you use windows clients. Take a look at the TNS_ADMIN parameter in the registry. Is that the correct path to your TNSNAMES.ORA? Maybe you have more than one ORACLE_HOMES?
