Slow Recovery Process

Hi ,
Running Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris 2.6.
I am recovering my Standby DB (after we found a gap seq. of 200 logs , each a size of around average of 5M). The recovery process was very slow. I was surprised to note that a query from v$rollstat returned back 0 rows. Init.ora is having the values of rollback_segments with around 10 rollback segments. I was always under the impression that reco process uses rollback segs to roll forward the transactions.
The recovery_parallelism is set to 3. What is the max value for the same ?

Any help would be appreciated.
