Hi
I am running Oracle 8.1.6 on a Windows NT 4.0 box. I was trying to set up a way to schedule my cold backup (I'm tired of staying late to do it :-) ). I was wondering if shutting down the service with a net stop command to stop the service was as safe and complete a shutdown as using shutdown immediate from the svrmgrl command line. I was just curious. Thanks

I would say use use svrmgrl
I would say use svrmgrl. This is the reccommended way and it also give you various options. Possibly if you just stop the service you will not achieve a clean shutdown and PMON might have to perform some recovery when you restart the instance.

Did you ever think of using RMAN, which would allow you to shutdown the database instance and take a cold backup. You can create a batch job that would so the shutdown and then take the cold backup and then restart the instance.

No, I had never looked into using RMAN. I guess I will have to do some research on that.
Thanks

judging from your description...seems that u are on NT platform?
..i will recommend the use of "AT" scheduling utltility as well as DOS cmd
scripts adopting svrmgrl cmd to shutdown and backup oracle database.
U can embed "HOST" string cmd within oracle sql scripts to exec DOS based
instruction for file copying..etc so in effect u just need to use "AT" to schedule and
call oracle scripts to perform any task u want.

Even in NT if you are using Services to stop th eORacle service. First Check the regedit as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0
Ensure that the value of ORA_ORCL_SHUTDOWNTYPE = i (i.e. immediate)
There Nothing You cannot Do, The problem is HOW.
