    Question

    Hi,

I have tried to import a dump file(.dmp) which is send from some other location , but its not allowing me to import that file to my database.

I think the problem is they have export a file from a database (oracl8i) which is there on Solaris box. And i am trying to import that file into my database (oracle8i) which is there on a windowsNT machine. The character set used in Solaris and WinNT are different.

The following error its throwing when i am trying to import
    the dump file.

    C:\>imp userid=system/manager file='d:\shared\exptrac.dmp' fromuser=traintrac touser=traint

    Hi,

the problem is not exp/imp accross platforms but versions.
The dumpfile was created in 8.1.7 export and your imp version is 8.1.6.
Use imp version 8.1.7, it should solve that.

    Regards,

    Ales

Well, it is the other way around: he should use exp 8.1.6 to export the database and also 8.1.6 to import it.

But there is another problem here.
    - Export was done with exp 8.1.7 (obviously the database is also 8.1.7)
    - Import utility used is 8.1.6
    - The destination *database* is 8.1.5 !!!!

So the safest way would be to use exp8.1.5 to export from 8.1.7 database and use imp8.1.5 to import into 8.1.5 database.

    Hi,
since srinivasm mentioned his dumpfile was sent from another location I didn't suppose he was able to export it again with exp of different version.

Therefore I proposed using imp 8.1.7 as I have never had problems with using imp 8.1.7 for 8.1.5 database.
I'v just tried it again without errors. (For be sure ).

Are there any known problems around that?

Ales, you are right. I've messed a couple of things - you can't use higher version of export utility on the lower version of the database, but there should be no problem with higher version of imp. Sorry about the confussion.
