Maximum no. of Process/connection?

Hello:

I am using Oracle 8.1.6 on Linux with dedicated server process configuration.

What are the implications of increasing the number of process from 100 to say 500?

Before increaing the PROCESSes what should I look for? What are all the side effects on oracle on increasing this value? (ex, any latches, high memory usage etc..)

Whats the maximum value, I can go upto? (from Oracle perspective and OS perspective).

The machine has 1G memory. How much memory each connection takes?

Note: Right now I am not considering MTS.

The application uses persistent connection and the connectin will stay as long as the WEB (Apache) server is alive.
