Hi Friends,
I am getting the 'ora-00304 requested instance number busy' error, when I try to strart the 2nd instance.
My first instance is running correctly. I shutdown the 1st instance and then tried to restart the 2nd instance, but this is also resulting in the same error.
Can some one help me what should be set right? My init. ora files (common file and for instances 1 and 2) are correctly written.
And I have also enabled the redo logs for the 2nd instance.
I am running 8.1.6 on compaq tru64 .
Thanks

Are you trying to do OPS? What do you mean by saying init.ora common for instance 1 and 2?
More information needed on what you are trying to do?
Try shutdown abort on your second instance and then mount it, recovering and open.

Yes, its a parallel server environment, with two instances.
I created the database having a common init.ora and two separate for the 2 instances pointing at the common ifile.
There is no problem when i start the first instance, the problem is only with the 2nd instance.
Thanks

Do you have the instance_number for the two instances same in your parameter file. On such case change the second and try again
Cause: An instance tried to start by using a value of the
initialization parameter INSTANCE_NUMBER that is already in use.
Action: Either
a) specify another INSTANCE_NUMBER,
b) shut down the running instance with this number
c) wait for instance recovery to complete on the instance with this number.

Thanks Sam, but no, my init.ora files are all alright.
It seems to be something about the redo logs, but I am not able to find out what.
Because if I do a select from v$log, it shows as:
2>
GROUP# THREAD# SEQUENCE# BYTES MEMBERS ARC STATUS FIRST_CHAN FIRST_TIME
---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- --- ---------------- ---------- --------------------
1 1 3 268435456 1 NO CURRENT 37720 18-JUN-01
2 1 2 268435456 1 NO ACTIVE 36566 18-JUN-01
3 2 1 268435456 1 NO CURRENT 5228 15-JUN-01
4 2 0 268435456 1 YES UNUSED 0
ARCHIEVED should have been NO for all the 4, but it is not.
Thanks
