Can you export tables from 8.1.7 and import it into 8.1.5? Or certain configurations need to be done before it's possible

You can export from 8.1.7 to 8.1.5 there is no configuration which is required for this

No , you cant export 8.1.7 for import 8.1.5, but it possible to export 8.1.5 to import 8.1.7

the above is not correct.
You can export/import both ways between 8.1.5 and 8.1.7 as long as you didn't use any new features of 8.1.7 (not supported in 8.1.5)

The only thing you may want to consider is to use the 8.1.7 Export utility when exporting and 8.1.5 Import utility when Importing (I am not sure if this is necessary but just to be in the safer side).

For the Information you can also export from an oracle 8 database and import into oracle 7 database
Perform the following steps
1) Execute catexp.sql and catexp7.sql from server manager into oracle 8 database
2) perform an export using oracle 7 export utility on oracle 8 database
3) Perform an import using oracle 7 import utility on oracle 7 database
