Did you try issuing shutdown immediate. The shutdown abort has to be your last option. you have to wait for some time for oracle to close the transactions.

Check your alert logs before you start the database to see what had caused the problem.

    Thanks Sam.

What scared me was I did ctl-c to kill cmd prompt and started a new cmd prompt, then I lost all control of database. svrmgr no responds at all. I tried for 20 mins, then I take a risk to reboot server and this time DB is luck to back to normal. I am working with oracle tech support to see what happened to cause db became unaccessable at all.

Did you check the alert log file. That would have logged the information on the cause. One of them could have been that you might have run out of sessions or the processes. That could be why your db looked like it had hung.

Every thing would have been revealed in the alert log file for this db instance. Check your alert log and try to make the fix.

If you need any help let us know. We would be happy to help and learn.

I also noticed that before db hung, I issued the cmd
"select ... from v$pwfile_users" and get error then it was about the same time my db hung..... Could this cause the problem?

If you need to see .trc file, I will send it over to you.

    Thanks in advance.

The ORA-1092 was due to the abort that you had issued. The problem could have been very much due to the select on the password file.

Wasn't there a thread earlier today, that discussed about the functionality problems on this select option?

Here is that thread for your reference:
    http://dbasupport.com/forums/showthr...threadid=10301

Check the trace file and it would give you some information on what caused exactly the problem, but it i sonly oracle who can analyze the trace dump F:\Orant\rdbms80\trace\ORA04175.TRC
