When you don't have a backup control file copy then you can use backup with trace option, But all ready if you have control file entry in init.ora when database started then you can copy backup physical file.

    Hi,
See both the methods are useful in backuping a controlfile.
After u make changes to ur database such as adding a datafile, dropping a tablespace etc. one should make a copy of controlfile by both the methods.
In case of making backup of controlfile through physical backup ,it is needed when u want to perform incomplete recovery or when u lose ur current controlfile.
In case of making controlfile backup using trace option,it is necessary when u need to recreate the controlfile or when u lose the controlfile. In trace option u can see all the contents of ur database such as datafiles, log files.

In case of any help please be free to write to me at rohitsn@altavista.com
