By the way my /etc/system filw has the following entries

Did any one of you encounter this problem before??
I suspect some problem with a parameter (may be post_wait_driver) in your init.ora file.Can you try starting up the instance,by giving the 'startup nomount'.If it is not starting, the problem should be with init.ora.If it is starting up,the problem is elsewhere and I need to think.
