oh sorry! I am sitting here waiting for a reply and I forgot to mention that it did not work.
Thanks for all the replies so far Davey23UK.
Iam currently running a grep on the entire file system for the old db name. I'm wondering if I missed something. This wont be done for a few hours. Until then any other suggestions?
well I got the grep results back, but it did not find anything. So back to square one with this.
what does tnsping ROCKY.ADMISSIONS.MVK.EDU from a command line return
C:\Documents and Settings\Rocky>tnsping rocky.admissions.mvc.edu
TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 220.127.116.11.1 - Production on 02-FEB-20

out of ideas really,
last thing I would try is jsust have rocky in the tnsnames file
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 18.104.22.168)(PORT = 1521))
(SERVICE_NAME = rocky.rocky)
then try tnsping rocky and tnsping ROCKY.ADMISSIONS.MVC.EDU
failing that, open a tar :-)
I ended up creating a db on another linux box at the university and porting over the data. Took only a few hours and we were back up and running.
I tried to create anther db on the same machine at first and I got all sorts of errors, so I said forget it. Things are looking good again.
Davey tahnks again for all your help.
