I wonder why it works , as I was taught in oracle7.3 , no possibility to do that.
Is the whole table data will be rearranged and it should be very slow?

Yes, in 8i you can drop a column. The column is deleted from the table definition with the data.
dropping a column may be slow for large tables. In that case you can use ALTER TABLE SET UNUSED to mark the colum unused and can delete it later by ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN..
