COLOR=darkblue]FORGOT PASSWORD FOR LISTENER [/COLOR]
Hai Buddies. I have a strange problem. I FORGOT the PASSWORD for the LISTENER that I set. So, I'm not able to control the LISTENER. I mean STOP it. The O/S is Solaris 6.0. The Oracle version is 8i. If I kill the listener process and restart it can I change the password successfully or what to do? Please Help me........

i am not shure but is the password documented in sqlnet.ora?

Now, first are you using encryped password for the listener or not?
I use encrypted and I also forgot it once, then you must delete the listener and recreate it. That's how I did it. You can never stop it otherwise.
You of course can kill -9 the process and start it but you cannot stop it without the password.
That is why some other admin should know the listener's password or set it to be the same as the SYSTEM's password.

How do I know that or How can I that whether my password is encrypted or not?
If all the possibilities fail and I have to re-install listener software, How to do it? Please help me. The O/S is solaris 6.o and the Oracle version is 8.1.6.0.0.

Open the listener.ora file:
If you have the encrypted line something like:
#----ADDED BY TNSLSNR 12-FEB-2003 11:51:19---
PASSWORDS_lsngamma = 71B05DCA178C645C
#--------------------------------------------
then it is encrypted.
If it is cleatext password the entry is PASSWORDS_your_listener_name.

I don't find any enrty in the listener.ora file. I mean either encrypted or clear text entry for password.
Then I suppose, there is no password for the listener. Just give the listener name as you find it in listener.ora to start/stop/administer the listener.Quote:

Do you have a backup file of the listener in the same directory. If yes, it is likely that someone has set an encrypted password and has either removed the encrypted lines or has not been able to save_config it due to OS rights. Bugger!
Just delete the blooody listener and recreate it. Kill -9 the process first.

This is the content in my listener.ora file. The listener that is being used is the default one. It has the name as "LISTENER" itself.
There is no password encryption or something like that in the file.
But I'm not able to RELOAD or issue any commands at the listener prompt(lsnrctl>). Please help me. I tried without giving password and it's failing giving the following message.
LSNRCTL> reload listener
Connecting to (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=IPC)(KEY=EXPROC0))(PROTOCOL_STACK=(PRESENTATION=TTC)(SESSION=NS)))
TNS-01169: The listener has not recognized the password
Please help me........
Do the following:
1. LSNRCTL
2. change_password
For all password type ENTER
Type 2 times the new password
3. set password
give the new password
4. save_config
5. stop
6. exit the LSNRCTL
7. LSNRCTL
8. start
What is the ouput of ps -ef|grep tns ?
I have done all that you said Julian. But nothing is working. I mean for all the actions or commands I'm doing it just gives the error
TNS-01169: The listener has not recognized the password. I'm confused.
One more thing you told me to remove the Listener entry. Does it mean that I should delete the entry for my current listener in th listener.ora file and kill the listener and retype the entry for it in the listener.ora file and start it fresh. OR Delete the listener.ora file completely and create new file?
If I kill the listener and restart will it restart successfully? OR will it ask for password again for restarting also?
Hey I succeeded after a continuous fight. I just killed the listener and restarted the listener. It worked.
