Rule #1: The Sr. DBA is always right.
Rule #2: If you ever doubt the Sr. DBA, see rule #1.
Welcome to the POOL of DBAs :D
Know the database, their names, what is the backup strategy they use. What the purpose they serve. Passwords for the databases. How they have been structured and etc. Always ask WHY/WHAT/HOW (never fear!) If you make a mistake don't worry make sure you dont make the same again. If you are deleting a record/table/file, always double confirm. For your personal safty first always choose the option to rename and them drop. This is a safest thing. Learn about the OS env, know the appropriate scripts and etc where they are located and how to execute them and etc... "ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE FUN" :D

Hi there dba_usa, come on in, the waters lovely! You icked a great job to be doing :-) I started off as a developer and only moved across to DBA in the last 12 months. Best move I ever did - I learned sooo much more about Oracle and Unix and Nt than if I had stayed a developer. The best thing about DBA is that there is ALWAYS something new to learn. I think that none of us can ever say that we know ALL there is to learn. Plus on the techy side, its a black art and you get to do the magic and impress people. PLUS it pays well - dunno about over in ythe USA but certainly in the UK, DBA gets paid much more than developer.
Have fun!
-Bob
Hi Bob..
What part of UK do you work in ?
