ORA-00445: background process "PMON" did not start after 120 seconds

I have a wierd situation on my hands. We originally had relinked
oracle (8.1.7) under the root user in linux by accident and when the
database was started up, some of the processes were running as root.
A problem for obvious reasons. So we shutdown did some relinking with
the oracle user, changed some ownerships. Now when we try to start
the database, it times out and we get
ORA-00445: background process "PMON" did not start after 120 seconds
in one of the alert logs. Looking at a log I see that the startup
does read the init.ora file but we get no further output after
the bdump, udump and cdump locations get set.

We also get the ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel error
but that is easily solved.

I've all over for answers but have come up with nothing. I don't
believe that it is an issue with the SHMMAX values or anything like
that because the database instance was previously running ok and
nothing has changed.

Any ideas or suggestions on the above problem would be greatly
appreciated. Has anyone else mistakenly linked and ran the db under
root? Solutions?

Did you check the permissions for the Oracle account?

I don't have any significant experience with Linux, but I seem to remember similar issues when the Oracle account had permissions issues with the spawned processes.

The permissions seem to be fine. The oracle user is the owner of everything in $ORACLE_HOME/bin.

does the oracle executable in $ORACLE_HOME/bin have the setuid permission on it?

Seems like the simplest solution would be to re-install in a different ORACLE_HOME under the "oracle" user.

The oracle executable does have the setuid permission.

As far as re-installing, I'm really trying to avoid that solution. I'd rather understand the problem and solution.

I get 4 different ora_xxxxx.trc files when I try to start the database. So which should I send and what parts of the trace file should I send?

I've used tkprof on a couple of trace files but that didn't produce too many clues.

Well you have privately left me a mail (I dont know why) and I replied you saying you have to get pmon*.trc

And please TKPROF is used for sql trace files not any trace files

I do not get any pmon trace files when I try to start up the db. Only ora_xxxxx.trc files and empty core dumps.
