Attn : DBA's Cannot Connect to Oracle8i

Hello Friends:
I have installed oracle8i without any database. Later on I created an instance with oradim80 pointing to initdtc.ora stored in d:\orant\database folder.
I also made appropriate changes in listener.ora,tnsnames.ora and initdtc.ora each having the information about the instance,protocol and machine name. When I try to connect, I get ORA-01034 ORACLE NOT AVAILABLE ERROR.
Can anybody guide me how to solve this as soon as possible.

Did you try to start your Instance?

Start the instance at the server, i think the database server at the server side is not open.
