You should look at every word.
There is a new article posted
"Manipulating Oracle Files with UTL_FILE" . It talks about monitoring alert_log. Have a look at it.
Are you familiar with OEM? All the events that trigger error messages in Alert log can be managed by OEM event management. Alterts can be sent to a pager whenever an error condition/event occurs. I suggest that is the way to go.
More info: That only works when you configure OEM with OMS (oracle management server) and install Oracle intelligent agent on the server.
OMS and Intelligent are installed automatically when you install oracle. You need to create a repository for OMS which is not a big deal.
A nice technique is to have the alert log from your important database(s) spooled to fast, pretty noisy impact printers in the office space the db staff work in.
Not only do you get instant access to the recent alert log history, but you're also the first to know when something funny is going on.
Thats right if OMS is on the same server as database. But its not a good practice though.
????????????????
In an enterprise, with test, integration, qa and production servers, one of the servers can be used for OMS. A small entity with a single database can configure OMS on the same machine as the DB server.
What I meant was...its not good practice to have a OMS running on any of the production and QA database servers.
