Hi All,
I'm trying to clone a demo database from one laptop to another.
I altered database backup control files to trace on the source database, then I shut the db down and copied all the relevant .dbf files to my destination laptop.
I'm using Oracle 8.1.7.2.6 on Win2K.
I created a new service on the destination laptop, and am now trying to 'startup nomount' on the cloned database.
I keep getting the error message
ORA-03113: end of file on communication channel.
I've checked the pfile\init.ora and all the file paths look okay.
It's driving me up the wall.
Please help........

Is the service started? does it start with error?
Is there any additional information in the alert log or event viewer?

Hi Jovery,
service starts okay on destination laptop. There is no alert log generated..........
Nothing of relevance in the event viewer..
I'm thinking of re-installing Oracle...

Take a look at document 134230.1 on metalink it may help, snippet below:
"Make sure you do not have SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=(NTS)
in the sqlnet.ora if you're connected to the machine as a domain user but there is currently no network connection. This is very common on laptops that are normally used in a networked environment but used standalone as well."

Thanks for that Jovery,
Interesting (?) reading. We did go hunting down this path for some time, with little success.
Eventually re-installed Oracle, and it was when we were applying the patches to take us up to 8.1.7.2.6 from 8.1.7.0.0 that we found our culprit.
Somebody (!) - well me actually, had cocked up the application of the previous patch.
So sorted that out and all is now well. Specifically the problem was with the orageneric.dll
Thanks for the input
