ORA-12638 Credential retrieval failed.

On Windows 2000 server, I am installing oracle 8i and after installation when I create database I am receiveing following error

ORA-12638 Credential retrieval failed.

There in no alert log or trace file generated.

I am not able to understand why it is coming.?

Kindly note that the service & listner is working properly

normally when i tried to connect to the database
without logging into the operating system, i have
faced this problem.

when i login into the operating system the problem
was solved.

you can try this.

oracle documentation does not cover this error.

but I am facing this error while installing Oracle software and then create new database with the help of DBCA

Oh yes, it does. However, you must look under TNS-12638, not ORA-12638.

I know it is under TNS, but even after enabling tracing for this error, no trace file generated and the problem is unsolved.

try commenting the following line from SQLNET.ORA before start creating the DB.

#SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)

I have droped the idia of installing 8i now I am installing 9i but now
a funny error is coming

When I insert the Oracle 9i CD-1 to install the Oracle on Win2000 server and when choose install option, after few seconds a message appears on screen i.e.
"Error writing to directory c:\pathname, please ensure that this directory is writable and have atleast 25 MB free space. Installation can not continue"

Kindly note the there is space avaiable on harddisk in GB's and it is writable. Then why this error is coming.?

can u check ur permissions on all the volumes where u are trying to install the oracle.

I am login as Administrator on server and have full rights on all drives

might be a stupid question, but are you installing oracle as
a user with admin privs and does the user belong to the Ora_DBA
group?

I am trying to install oracle 10g on my machine but i m getting the same error
"Cannot write to directory...."
My hard disk is having 2.92 GB of free space but still i m getting this error.
My machine is a P4 one (64bit).

Is this becoz of P4 i m getting this error ?? :confused:

Yes - or set it to SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NONE)
I've experienced this error before and not using NTS authentication always solved it.

I ran into the same issue with Installing Oracle 9201 on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine.

I found that when I logged into windows, I had logged into the domain in cached mode. Two things fixed this problem.

1. Make sure I was plugged into LAN instead of wireless after reboot so I get an IP prior to logging in (dell wireless utility doesn't start prior to login). This allowed me to pull down my domain policy stuff and subsequently allowed Oracle to install.

2. Make the change in the SQLNET.ORA file to remove the NTS line. You can also change it to (NONE) if you don't want to comment it out for whatever reason.
