i faced a problem
i have installed linux successfully... can do a ls, su, ps and etc...
but now, after i mounted the oracle cd-rom installer disc, i cant run the file as in ./runInstaller.. the error message is DISPLAY not set..
i dont have a single idea as to solve it...
please help

set the oracle home and environment correctly.
There are good installation doc avaiable in this forum.
You have to set the DISPLAY variable in linux
normally DISPLAY=:0
then export DISPLAY
This will be automatically set if you select terminal from
linux desk top;
correction
DISPLAY= your hostname:0
export DISPLAY
where do i set the display and export?
is it in a file?
or at the command prompt?

You can do it at the command prompt..and before running the runInstaller script from the oracle CD-ROM

go to technet.oracle.com and download linux installation guide, at least you get a picture what you have to do
i tried 2 things. at the prompt,
1) i typed setup and reconfigured the X configuration. but no matter what permutations of options i choose, it just prompted errro before i had to exited.
2) i did a more /etc/hosts and get the line below
127.0.0.1 basis localhost.localdomain onemorewordbutforget
then i issue the below with the hostname basis and localhost.localdomain
DISPLAY= your hostname:0
export DISPLAY
after which i mounted the cdrom, run ./runInstaller but still failed
the error message is Error:DISPLAY not set...
i am running on linux 7.2. my video card is working and is from S3
Try the following
Go to telnet session from Linux Desktop
You should try it from linux desk top
No need to set DISPLAY variable
mount the CDROM
then execute program
if it is not working
send the output of
echo $DISPLAY
from command prompt

you should go to installation Doc first. however you may try this:
add below to /home/username/.bash_profile
export DISPLAY=localhost:0
export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEl=2.2.5
export PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
to check either your display setting is correct or not try to type 'xclock' at your command prompt

Do hostname on the linux prompt in a terminal session.
It will show the hostname.
Use the value of hostname in the following command.
DISPLAY=hostname:0
export DISPLAY
If you have a network card installed
DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0
export DISPLAY
will work also.
Sometimes your java session will crash with something like SIGSEV.
You then have to unset certain variables.

hi, i have managed to install the oracle db. i typed the following to solve the display problem
1) display=hostname:0.0
2) export display
3) xhost +hotsname
BUT, during installation, there is this error...
"error in invoking target install of makefile" this error statement happens and shows up many times during the linking times.
AND, after installation, i issued sqlplus, the following error occurs
"sqlplus error while loading shared libraries, libclntsh.so.8.o
i am running pentium 133 with 64mb ram, and oracle 8.1.7

Look like you managed to break back of Oracle binaries. I believe you require /usr/ucb in your path, make sure that it comes after /usr/bin and /usr/ccs/bin in the $PATH setting. Then try reinstalling it.
hi, i dont have /usr/ccs/bin and /usr/ucb in my filesystem. please advise..
doc is a bit old (for 8.1.6) but still applicable for 8.1.7 and 9i

2) redhat 7.1

are they sufficient?
