I have 2 instances on the server (8.1.6)
Till noon it was fine..
Now that I try to start up the 2nd instance, I set the ORACLE_SID and HOME and PATH to respective paths and when I start the db it says:
ORA-01102: cannot mount database in EXCLUSIVE mode
Why is this. The other DB is simply fine.. When I log into the unix as oracle user, the default profile is set to the other db and then when i need this 2nd instance I change and use..
But not anymore, I tried shutting down the 1st.. same problem.. Why?

I have taken it from manual ,i am not sure how practically it works .
Cause: An instance tried to mount the database in exclusive mode, but some other instance has already mounted the database in exclusive or parallel mode.
Action: Either mount the database in parallel mode or shut down all other instances before mounting the database in exclusive mode

Have you tried the other way round, mount the second DB and then trying to mount the first DB ?
