What are the 'Service Update' entries in my Listener.log file?
e.g.
12-NOV-02 22:52:58 * service_update * ORCL * 0
Also - can you rename the Listener.log file whilst the Db is up and running (like I do to archive the Alert log)?

Great idea to rename alert.log with the db up and running :D
To rename listener.log just stop the listener and rename/drop it and restart the listener. If you have MTS activated dispatchers won't work untill you reboot the db.

Service updates refers to the instance checking with the listener to make sure that things are still hunky dory between the 2.
aarroyob suggestion is fine. But yes you can do the listener.log just like the alert.log.
you've got me worried now!!!!!
What harm does it do to rename the alert log when its up and running? I've done it for ages with no adverse affects (I think!). The DB just starts a new one at the point I archived the old one.)
What would you recommend in it's stead?
