ORA-00205: error in identifying control file, check alert log for more info

Hi my name is Ambarish i got this problem when i run database
i am runing on linux
can any one help me

SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.

You should be able to look at the init/spfile and find out where the control files should be. Are they there? Did they get corrupted? Did someone chmod them so that the database could not read/write to them? Are you using the wrong init/spfile? You can also look through the alert log and see which control files were used that last time the database started successfully.

So if you do an 'ls -l /disk1/sun/controlfile/contro101.ctl' what happens? Does the file exist? if you do a df -h does the volume exist? Can you cd to /disk1/sun/controlfile?

I hope your whole database is not on /disk1. If so there is only 35MB there now. "/dev/hdd7 2.0G 36M 1.9G 2% /disk1"

So how am I going to search through you server and find the missing control file? Is there anything in /disk1/sun/controlfile? Did someone delete the control file? Did someone delete the database? Did this database ever start before? Where is your backup? :confused:

i am nt able to enter in to the 10.2.0 where i hv installed binaries
but the filles r there in the 10.2.0 i saw nw only

All that you told me is that you have Oracle binaries. How did you create the database? Did you use the dbca tool? How long have you been using this database? How much data should be in the database? When did the database suddenly stop? Did the database ever exist? :confused:

No i dint use dbca tool

i manually created started creating database
i dont hv any data

Since you are learning Oracle, I would suggest that you delete the old database and use dbca to create a new database. You should also review the concepts manual, http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B...b28301/toc.htm, to see what the various parts of an Oracle database are and how they interact. Recreating the database should help you to learn more about Oracle.

go to otn.oracle.com and read the concepts manual

then go and learn the difference between su and su - in a unix environemnt, the help you needc cannot be give on a forum.

I even severely doubt that you have even created a database

so hw should i follow the steps

You need to learn this yourself. I think you have been given enough help.
