Hi, 28th April 2001 18:10 hrs chennai

I am also now working on Oacle Apps DBA its really good we had a common cause.

This are the few tips i can give you.

First we have to know there is not much difference between oracle 11i DBA and 8i DBA.

Except how to install Rapid Installation wizard 11CD's(Diff modules) for which you have a proper Doc given by oracle. This Cd's contains various modules which we select while installing(it will guide you through) according to the project requirements. The doc clearly guides you acorss on this.( for PDF file doc mail padu20002000@yahooo.com)

Moreover i was also surprised to know that companies asking for Oracle 11i functional DBA's.

The core area we have to concentrate is Oracle 11i Performance Tuning. For this oracle has brought out a excellent book which i saw in a Amazon or oracle stores which i dont remember exactly now.

All other funda and concept about DBA and 11i DBA is not a big issue.

But being a exp 11i DBA on installation really pays much more than the General DBA in sal wise because of Demand and supply gap.

http://www.osborne.com/oracle/ go to this web site send a mail to contact us mail id's provided req for 11i DBA related books they will give you more inf.I have also now done the same.

Also in future post your Threads in Oracle Applications DBA Forum in this web site.Where you can share your expertise and doubts with Apps DBA's.

I do agree if you have interest and enthu towards becoming Applications DBA its not big deal to get there.

Practically Speaking its big deal. None of the times first time installation(brand new installation) is not a big deal for anything or any s/w. All the issues/problems will start when you want to upgrade or migrate or apply patches etc. Thats where the real experience counts and how soon you can figure out and fix the problems to minimise the downtime in doing that.

Being applications DBA, there is lot to learn and work and fix the problems/issues coming up in day to day life. Of course, that depends upon the role and responsibilities you have at your site. Most of the time in any enterprize if you are applications dba you end up having your responsibilities overlap (on functional side too).

Patch Management or migration or upgradations are big head aches on applications side depending the number of modules implementation at your site. Now a days Oracle is making little easier with 11i releases.

Iam not sure what other experienced Applications DBAs says, this is what I feel with the experience I have. But interesting and challenging too :)

I would agree with Sam. Sure, the DB that Apps runs on is Oracle 8i, but the similarities stop there. The install for 11i is cake. The constant patching, testing, cloning, configuration, etc. is what really kills you. (Don't even get me started about printers....) I can't even imagine how hard it was before 11i.

I am a DBA. When our company implemented Apps 11i, I was tagged as the Apps DBA because of my background with Oracle products. I haven't felt so lost in 10 years. For everything that the functional group asked, it took me days to figure out what they were talking about and how to fix it. I finally was able to get a handle on it after about 3 months, about the same time we went live.

There are so many pieces to being an Apps DBA; http server, Forms Server, Reports Server, Concurrent managers, client installs, researching bugs, etc. I believe the differences between an 8i DBA and an 11i DBA are great. I'm glad I went through it, but I am also glad it's over (for now).

I agree with what you say there Jeff, especially about the printers. I've done a lot of Apps on NT and sometimes the printers are a easy to setup, but at other times almost impossible. I've worked with 11.0.2/11.0.3 and the install was easy enough, but the patching was hell especially the upgrade from 11.0.2 to 11.0.3

Well said Jeff.

I've been an AppsDBA for 5 years and it's getting more difficult with every release.
