To the Moderators and experienced DBA's..
As you can see from my registration date I am new to this site. However, I am not new to Oracle Database admin. I've always had the philosophy that there is always someone who is smarter than you are and I figured I'd find them here and continue to learn. I must say that I have found some very knowledgeable individuals here. But, that's not my reason for writing this. Every day that I come to this site and see some of the questions that people ask and I have to think to myself "and these people get paid?". Don't get me wrong I am a strong advocate of "there's no such thing as a stupid question" however, some of the questions people ask here are ones that make me shutter. In my eyes being a DBA is a very important responsiblity and it is not something that someone can be just thrown into. We as DBA's are soley responsible for our companies data. If you think about it we could potentially cause a company to go bankrupt if we do not do our job correctly.
Personally, I kind of get a sadness (more like a laugh) from a person when he/she wants to know if they can copy datafiles off to the side when the database is open for a backup, because that tells me that the manager who hired them is just as in the dark if not worse and that all their data is going to go down the drain because that manager wasn't smart enough to send his pseudo DBA to get some formal training.
Am I the only one around here that feels this way?

Yes, I think many would agree with your point but the one thing to keep in mind is that when you are under the gun you don't tend to think rationally. Often I think people post as a panic response to a particular situation. Or, often someone will post a question and then start to look for the answer, this way whoever gets there first wins. I know am guilty of doing this at least once or twice.
However, I am not here to vindicate all posts in this forum. Sometimes they are just plain bad, for lack of a better term.
Ps SHOOT THE DAMN DEVELOPERS!!

Now that's funny! I thought during the registration process there was a radio button that asked if you were a developer and if you clicked it, it wouldn't let you in.

My guess is that 8 out of those 9 times the boss has no idea what he is doing to his pseudo DBA - "It can't be more complicated than Excel, can it?"
The other 1 time out of 10 the signature says OCP - and my blood pressure gets dangerously high.
(Mr.H is right too - we all have panicked, had brain farts etc . . )

Ohhh man, if I saw that I don't think I'd be able to hold my composure. I'd be afraid that I would start dispensing rude comments about how well the individual could memorize books. Or some other colorful metaphor comparing the individual’s mentality to a scratch and sniff.

The urge to say something about the question/poster when the signature includes OCP, and it is a question like, "what is a control file?" is hard to ignore. If you think someone needs to be called out because it truly is a dumb question (or based on laziness), go for it. There are a few people here who are thin-skinned, so you may catch some flack for it. And not everyone will think you are funny, but what the heck, they can go take a flying, well, no need to go down that road. Some people are here to spoonfeed, others try to teach or ask questions that help the poster understand the situation. Jump on in!

The internet is not necessarily a beacon of truth.
Even though this board is pretty good, it wouldn't surprise me if some of the OCPs in signatures are fictitious.

that's not worse than some peeps profile says *Senior* dBA then you look all the questions he posted you start wondering "hmmm" because most of us know OCP is a piece of cake
regarding training, I know a guy who took twice ALL Oracle 8i DBA course and SQL, PL/SQL course but seems that the company wasted money. IMHO a dBA should be someone who likes curiosity and with some sense of testing/investigation things

I don't know OracleDoc, there could be a question you'd post which I might consider Stoop-id. Companies as a whole is more like a singular body which has a typical culture of it's own. Talking about oracle itself , I hear rather ****ty stories of couple of mates who've slaved there. Individuals sitting as senior vp's as well are begging to their prod. managers to help'em out with some deals as they've got heavy mortgages. I've heard it, I've seen it and I continue to see it. Getting bitter is gonna make me a bitter individual who'd snap back at colleague's who're displaying high signatures(even sometimes writing procs etc with names/date created/revised/ et but not knowing the head or tail of it-- not even understanding what it did -- basically copy/paste), but instead just tell them what should be done, I tend to speak softly but carrying a big stick.
So jump on in and see where you can contribute.Not everyone here who's carrying a big bag of posts on his back is/has generally contributed greatly. Judge for yourself how you're going to conduct yourself. Remember burst of invective, rebuttal is not just your prerogative, others may do that as well.
